Oil industry exposed to human, material damage - Consultant

Luanda – The world oil industry, including Angola’s, is exposed to damages like leaks, fires, deaths, material losses and pollution.

This was said Wednesday in Luanda by the Brazilian oil company (Petrobras) environmental and health security consultant, José Luís Neves.

Speaking to Angop at the seminar on “Analysis of risks in oil industry”, the specialist said that in order to reinforce measures against disasters, the Oil Ministry upgrades personnel on risks in oil exploration.

He said as well that when risks are analysed in a methodical way, it becomes easier to train workers to prevent accidents and make platform and refinery projects safer.

To José Neves, the oil firms should explore oil in a safer way, protecting the environment and maintaining the security of installations.

According to the source, when oil firms gain more control of risks and carry out more prevention, the possibility of disasters to occur drops significantly.

He stated that currently, the probability of pollution, leaks, fires and deaths to occur is very low, adding that although there are more than 5,000 oil platforms around the world, environmental accidents are heard of sporadically.

As to technological conditions, José Neves stated that oil companies are obliged by international conventions and directives to use certified and explosion-free machines and equipment.

The oil firms are also required to hold environmental licence, emergency and contingency plans.

At total of 14 oil companies, among local and foreign, are registered with the Angolan Oil Ministry, responding for a production of about two million barrels a day.

The seminar on “Analysis of risks in oil industry” is being organised with assistance from the Brazilian oil firm “Petrobras”.
